Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ludomir Rózycki remains frustratingly obscure outside of his native Poland, something this new album of his three works for piano and orchestra will help to rectify as his late-nineteenth-century musical language— and an accomplished ear for instrumental colour —responds to the horrors of two world wars with an irrepressible spirit.

"An outstanding recording of a piano and orchestra... Jonathan Plowright and Lukasz Borowicz are like alchemists in the way they can raise first-class second-rate music to another level, a couple of fiercely combative squash players at times, two firm friends reminiscing on a long country walk at others." -- Gramophone

Excellent New Release July 18, 2016 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "This new Hyperion disk is Volume 67 in its distinguished Romantic Piano Concerto series, and in my opinion it fully measures up to the standards set by its predecessors. Ludomir Rozycki's 2 piano concertos were both composed in times of enormous stress on his native Poland (#1 from late in WW1 and #2 partway through WW2), but you wouldn't know it from the character of these works. Jonathan Plowright and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra collaborate on this program with stylish vigor, and the interplay and balance between soloist and orchestra seem just about perfect. As usual, Hyperion's sound quality is demonstration class. Thus, if you asked me to characterize Rozycki's music, I'd have to say something like this, '20th century Polish music for piano and orchestra probably doesn't get much better than this.' Recommended." Report Abuse
skeleton in the closet May 24, 2016 By stefan u. (calgary, AB) See All My Reviews "The performance is good, although not the most inspiring. Rozycki's piano concertos, however, are painful to listen to. He did compose couple of enjoyable pieces but these concerti are best left untouched." Report Abuse
Another winner in the series March 15, 2016 By S. Brown (Christiansburg, VA) See All My Reviews "After 67 releases, you'd thing Hyperion would be scraping the barrel bottom in their Romantic Piano Concerto series, but not so! I'd never heard on Rozycki, and now I want more. If you love the splashy, virtuosic ultra-Romantic type of work (think WARSAW CONCERTO), you'll find a lot of it here, but there's more to it: depth, beautiful tunes, and, of course from this series, top notch pianism and orchestral accompaniment. I can't wait for #68!" Report Abuse
