Notes and Editorial Reviews

Johannes Brahms was photographed frequently in his lifetime and took pleasure in candid photographs. In a professional portrait, the most notable feature is his powerful gaze. After 1876, Brahms received compliments for his eyes. One observer described them "fine brow with flashing blue eyes..." The Piano Trio No. 1 opens with the cello's radiant lyrical theme, establish B Major decisively without a hint that a somber B Minor mood would bring the work to a close. Violinist David Perry, cellist Uri Vardi and pianist Paulina Zamora bring Brahms' gaze of these piano trios to life again.

REVIEW:

The two discs are divided to reflect the chronology of Brahms’s final thoughts on the trios.
Read more The Second and Third take up the first disc; the revised Op 8 follows by itself. What results is a seamless expedition through the stages of the composer’s distinctive weaving of ideas and instruments.

Zamora, Perry and Vardi take Brahms at his word even as they lift phrases to subtle and urgent effect. There is no temptation to over-dramatise the impassioned moments or wallow in Brahms’s tender lyricism. Each of the trios unfolds as if these artists are engaging in a series of natural and compelling conversations.

Balances are superb, not always a given when it comes to the cello in the genre of the trio, and the musicians apply tonal beauty to everything they touch. In all, a wonderful release.

Performed with apparent zest and joy that the composer intended it to be played. Excellent engineering makes a top quality sound reproduction. Very pleased with this recording." Report Abuse
