Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is a deeply pondered performance of real gravitas.

"The controversial Pletnev" boasts the latest marketing material from Virgin; but no more controversial, surely, than Mozart himself when writing his Piano Concerto No. 9 for the visiting virtuoso Mademoiselle Jeunehomme, and finding an excuse to kick his Salzburg audiences out of their complacency before he finally kicked the dust from off his heels and left town.

Pletnev's performance raises no alarms, though he certainly enjoys the piano's early entry into some high-stepping staccato which draws a marcato string riposte. There's a degree of audacity, too, in the interplay of one hand with another, and both with the woodwind soloists in
Read more the development. The strings of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie play with restrained vibrato which makes the slow movement even darker, more austere; and Pletnev's probing rubato makes it more of a debate than an aria. The finale is a true Presto, made lucid by the rigour of its rhythmic definition, and constantly unpredictable in Pletnev's pacing of its cadenzas and of the perverse little minuet.

The K466 is not too quick off the mark to deprive the snarling upbeats of their full fury, the syncopations from tugging hard, and the descending chords from digging deep. The deliberation of Pletnev's own playing can verge on the ponderous (especially when the recorded sound is on the constricted side); but then this is a deeply pondered performance of real gravitas, using Beethoven's cadenzas and making a weighty argument out of the Rondo right until its final return.
