Notes and Editorial Reviews

Stephen Cleobury conducts the choir of King's College, Cambridge in this memorable recital of English Romantic choral music, exquisitely sung and superbly recorded in the college's famous chapel.

Timed to coincide with the Jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II, this DVD presents a mouth-watering collection of favorite anthems. Appropriately, it includes some of the music sung at the Coronation service itself in 1953. It also features two sublime anthems by William Harris the man who taught Princess Elizabeth the piano.

Grace and Grandeur October 15, 2013 By PAMELA L. (ELMHURST, NY) See All My Reviews "For those who have only heard but never seen the incomparable Choir of King's College, Cambridge, this elegant and sonically coherent DVD will make a fine addition to their collection. Choirmaster Stephen Cleobury's sensitive and careful direction brings out the crystalline diction and unfailing vocal control of the renowned ensemble. The Choir's tonal purity bathes the ear in every one of the great anthems that represent the finest examples of the English choral tradition. The great favorites, such as C. Hubert Parry's I Was Glad and Howells' Like As the Hart, receive triumphant, rather than triumphalist, treatment, while a work such as William Harris' numinous Faire Is the Heaven, transports the listener to an eternally blissful realm. For all its seeming austerity, however, there is a subtle yet discernible sensuality to this production. The camera glides caressingly over the chapel's ancient walls, stained-glass windows, and distinctive fan vaulting. It calls attention to the long fingers of the organist as he plays, to light on the choristers' pristine white surplices, and picks out the sacred images rendered in stone and glass that adorn the chapel's interior. The camera is an all-seeing but unobtrusive eye, reverently providing a tour of the sacred space. Focus on the lives of the choristers is an enjoyable and revelatory bonus on this DVD, showing that they are no different from other boys. They have their good and bad days, worry over their studies, and even contend with physical limitations. While they may look and sound angelic, they are normal youngsters faced with the challenges of growing up. While visually engaging, "Anthems From King's" is all about the great music and the soaring voices that sing it. A few years old, the production is as visually and aurally fresh and sharp as the day it was created. It is a superb recording of a superb choir." Report Abuse
