Notes and Editorial Reviews

Bernhard Paumgartner established the “Salzburg Mozart Style,” which also represents his very own personal style. It is based on the belief that performing Mozart’s works requires “First and foremost humility, which keeps away any vain ambitions from the artist’s human domains. This is particularly true for the much-praised “own conception” and the striving for peculiar effects and blank virtuosity. In this regard, Mozart’s works are particularly sensitive.” Quite clearly, the broad, triumphant orchestral tutti was not among the preferred sound concepts of Paumgartner, the then leading Mozart exegete. What he preferred was a succinct, detail-oriented performance style based on meticulous rehearsal. This recording of 1966 documents his Read more artistic-emphatic approach.
