Notes and Editorial Reviews

One of the most valuable aspects of the Sony Classical Masters Series imprint is its restoration and re-issue of out of print recordings, and this 3 CD collection of British pianist Paul Crossley’s comprehensive overview of Francis Poulenc’s works for piano is a particularly notable confirmation of this cultural value. When it was originally released in 1990, Gramophone Magazine stated the collection contained “subtle and musicianly playing—as one would expect from Crossley that offers a somewhat unusual interpretation of Poulenc, the wistful element in his music deepened into a slightly self-conscious 'poetic' lyricism…” Now 25 years later, Crossley’s Poulenc remains an essential destination in any survey of Poulenc’s considerable body of Read more work.

nice complete set of Poulenc piano works, but... April 28, 2017 By J. Uhlemann See All My Reviews "This is an attractive set of the "complete" piano works of Francis Poulenc. I wish it included the 2-piano works, but, still, it is nice to have this. To my knowledge, this is the first complete set to come out since Gabriel Tachino's set on EMI in the LP era. That set, though did a better job in capturing the quirky bittersweet quality of this music: saucy, yet serious; faux-bombastic and virtuosic at times, yet engagingly simple at others. The brilliant toccata of the 3 pieces was less motoric when that was needed, and played in an episodic sort of way. I have a recording on an old 78 rpm of Horowitz playing it and at just the right moment he backs off and lets the melancholy, romantic tune at the end (a "trademark" of the Poulenc style) come through. Still, there are some really lovely moments in this set, and it is beautifully recorded. The notes are good." Report Abuse
Masterful and Moving December 8, 2015 By Jonathan S. (Anchorage, AK) See All My Reviews "This is my first exposure to Poulenc, and to quote a professional review of another Poulenc album "not what you expect from a 20th Century Composer". Every piece is listenable and beyond that enjoyable and in many cases moving, due in no small part to the masterful and sensitive interpretation in the playing of Paul Crossley. The "Melancolie", and "Hymne" from 3 Pieces particularly spoke to me during my first listening and I will be back to find more I'm sure." Report Abuse
