Notes and Editorial Reviews

The conductor Eugene Ormandy had an unprecedented 44 year association with the Philadelphia Orchestra and from his earliest years held an especial affinity for the music of Jean Sibelius, indeed the gossamer loamy orchestral textures of the Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy’s baton was an equal partner to the immense scope of Sibelius’ output. This marvelous 8 CD box set released on the Sony Classical Masters Series imprint is an almost overwhelming reminder of the scope and affecting beauty of Sibelius’ symphonies, tone poems, and violin concertos and also as a bonus to close listeners provides the means to deploy the ability to comparatively listen to the orchestra with Ormandy shape and re-shape their readings with works recorded at Read more different periods of time.  Old time excitement June 17, 2017 By P. Minault (Sherman Oaks, CA) See All My Reviews "I'm one of those listeners who's revising my view of Eugene Ormandy. And this set is a good reason why. I have other sets using advanced recording techniques and delivering the performances in surround sound - and I like all that. But dipping into these renditions brings me back to a kind of old-fashioned excitement in music listening, When they're played right, these symphonies keep the listener alert, like a well-told story. Filled with ominous slow developments and outbursts of sudden action, the pieces pull us into their world. I find I have to stop working when listening; I'm catching my breathe for the next buildup. Jarvi is great a letting the music paint a landscape and showing the nature-worship in Sibelius. But Ormandy lets the Finnish master tell his tales, and delivers them with masterful excitement."  Very Best  January 10, 2016 By D. Downing (Shingletown, CA) See All My Reviews "I listen to this while delivering mail in Northern California (state of Jefferson) makes the day go by nicely. I would recommend this to all Ormandy and Sibelius fans!" Report Abuse
Ormandy scores again December 10, 2015 By S. Brown (Christiansburg, VA) See All My Reviews "Ormandy was one of the most underrated conductors of the 20th century, only now coming into his own, thanks to releases like this. His Sibelius is craggy, noble, and of course, beautifully played. So many FINLANDIAs may be a little overkill, but you shouldn't just breeze through this set all at once---take time to savor these wonderful performances." Report Abuse
