Notes and Editorial Reviews

How fortunate that, with modern technology, the most subtle of nuances in a performance can be successfully captured in a recording. The music of the great French master Debussy - who revolutionised and pushed the boundaries of tonal harmony, as well as discovered new sound and expressive possibilities for musical instruments - is reproduced in this high resolution quality recording like never before.

The three chamber music works represented here were all written in the last three years of Debussy’s life and are a fusion of the styles he used to adopt throughout his composing career.

The cavalier and Moorish flavour of the Cello-Piano Sonata, the subtly seductive Violin Piano Sonata and the beautifully
Read more transparent Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp are masterfully performed by members of the legendary Boston Symphony Orchestra, with the great Michael Tilson Thomas at the piano. As an added bonus, we have the mystical Syrinx for solo flute which completes this beautiful album.

Chamber of Delights December 19, 2015 By Christopher  Abbot (Chilmark, MA) See All My Reviews "In the bloom of their new contract with Deutsche Grammophon, the Boston Symphony Orchestra recorded several LPs with conductors William Steinberg, Seiji Ozawa, Michael Tilson Thomas, Claudio Abbado, and Rafael Kubelik in the early 70s. In addition, principal musicians concertmaster Joseph Silverstein, violist Burton Fine, cellist Jules Eskin, flautist Doriot Anthony Dwyer and harpist Ann Hobson, accompained by pianist MTT, recorded under the name Boston Symphony Chamber Players, beginning with this sparkling collection of pieces by Debussy. This isn't the misty impressionism of early Debussy; here one finds music of rare power and substance and almost Romantic passion. Debussy took the sonata form and infused it with his own style and character. And Syrinx is a tiny gem of, yes, Impressionist genius. Needless to say, these are superior performances, full of incisive playing and insight. The remastering to surround sound doesn't bring the same level of freshness as do the orchestral recordings, but there is a fullness and resonance to the soundstage that approximates a live concert. I hope that Pentatone sees fit to release the other albums recorced by these splendid musicians." Report Abuse
