Notes and Editorial Reviews

Formerly chief conductor for the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, and Conductor Laureate for Staatskapelle Dresden: Sir Colin Davis’ legacy includes the symphony cycle of Franz Schubert. This Sony Classical Masters Series 4 CD box set reveals both the understatement with which Davis led and his famed commitment to unusual tempi shifts that gave these interpretations a lasting distinction.

Excerpt from a review of a previous release of this material:

Sir Colin Davis sticks to the "official" Schubert symphonies: the famous Unfinished (No 8) is included, but not the more recently rehabilitated torsos and fragments. He also doggedly insists that the
Read more introduction to the Great C major (No 9) is slow, despite the powerful evidence of the manuscript. But in general the touch is lighter, the pacing livelier on the whole in these Dresden performances than Davis's recent LSO form would have led one to expect. Add fine recordings, capturing the Lukaskirche acoustic to perfection, and you have a set that can hold its own in any company.

Schubert Wins Again October 8, 2017 By Jesse J. (New York, NY) See All My Reviews "Sir Colin Davis does quite near great versions of the eight Schubert symphonies. The only mild complaint I have is that to my ears at least Claudia Abbado is just a little bit more dramatic in these works, especially the Unfinished and the Great 9th. However, some people I am sure would prefer the Davis versions. Just my two cents." Report Abuse
Great early Schubert symphonies!  December 16, 2015 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "The six early Schubert symphonies are unusually well played in this set. All the little features that may be passed over in routine performances contribute to the joy of hearing these pieces as performed here. I've never heard them sound so much like real masterpieces. Symphonies 8 and 9 receive fine performances too, but they are not as far ahead of the pack as the others. Sound quality is very good, but I noticed that in parts of Symphony No. 9 the midrange tones sound a bit emphasized on my speakers, as though there was a resonance in the hall. Certainly not a big problem. This is an excellent set!" Report Abuse
