Press review October 30, 2017 By Classicalacarte Classicalacarte (Saint-Donat, QC) See All My Reviews "Alberic Lagier of Musikzen (01/2016) has the following interesting comment about Zhu Xiao-Mei’s interpretation of the Inventions and Sinfonias of Bach : « It is not music to be taken on a desert island, it is rather the music that will take you there ». We have located seven reviews which are globally fairly favourable to this recording. Philippe Venturini writes for the French magazine Classica (#180, 03/2016) that the pianist, as always, wants to provide an interpretation of Bach’s music aimed at the general public. The art of the cantabile, as suggested by Bach, is prevailing all over. Gaetan Naulleau of the other French magazine Diapason (#649, 09/2016) underline the high level of the recorded sound: “… the mikes reproduce the richness of the pianist’s touch which is bordering on barely touching… as if it were the pen of a calligrapher”. Harriet Smith writes for Gramophone (03/2016) that Xiao-Mei’s approach is “… full of delicacy, precision and a sense of correctness. Her voicing lends clarity to Bach contrapuntal lines and her trills are beautifully manicured”. But she adds “… its all a bit too well mannered”. Alan Swanson on his part (Fanfare, 39:5, 05/2016) has no hesitation in recommending “… this disc highly”. He welcomes in particular the pianist’s decision to perform “… all the Inventions followed by the Sinfonias” – with a cantabile style of playing – as Bach would have it. Finally, returning to Lagier’s review, his point of view is “… that with these short pieces, one must not only follow what the master says, but one must invent from what he suggests”.
