Notes and Editorial Reviews

ICH WILL IN FRIEDE FAHREN Franz Vitzthum (ct); Les Escapades (period instruments) CHRISTOPHORUS 77305 (63:31 Text and Translation)

Music of RIGATTI, BIBER, FERDINAND III, LEGRENZI, H. BACH, FUNCK, GEIST, AHLE, THIEME, J. P. KRIEGER

This is subtitled “sacred music for countertenor and viol consort,” the main title being taken from Johann Philipp Krieger’s concluding lament, a paraphrase, or rather an expansion, of Simeon’s Read more words of peace at his glimpse of the newborn Savior. (His younger brother Johann had no middle name.) The vocal works include Latin hymns by Rigatti, Ferdinand III, and Ahle, while other German settings come from Heinrich Bach (1615–92) and Geist. The rest of the program offers multi-movement instrumental works. Two of the vocal works are already available: Christian Geist’s Vater unser on the recent Robin Blaze reissue (32:1) and a couple of other programs, Johann Ahle’s Jesu dulcis memoria in a Yoshikazu Mera compilation (22:1). The program seems designed to give the vocalist equal time with the purely instrumental works.

Even though Franz Vitzthum is given top billing, the disc really belongs to the four women (with three guests joining them) who make up the ensemble, since they play throughout. They have been performing together since 2000, but this seems to be their first recording. They have worked intensively with Vitzthum, the possessor of one of the most remarkable countertenor voices I know for his light, smooth tone. He has none of the edge that characterizes (often in a positive way) the voices of others. If that sounds like a woman’s voice, Vitzthum has a distinctive personality that overcomes the implication. His interpretations are subtle, his execution deliberate. I look forward to his next recording.
