ENGLISH LUTE SONGS Robin Blaze (ct); Elizabeth Kenny (lt) HELIOS 55249 (70:34)

Music by JOHNSON, ANON, CAMPION, DOWLAND, LAWES, DANYEL, PURCELL, LOCKE, REGGIO, BANISTER, HUMFREY, BLOW

There are no fewer than 30 pieces in this beautifully recorded disc. Six of them are lute solos played by one of the finest lutenists alive. I have reviewed Elizabeth Kenny accompanying Mark Padmore in these pages; she combines the sensitivity that one expects from a lutenist Read more with a welcome rhythmic liveliness, and, in the slower pieces, what I might call patience—the willingness to let the lyrical flow express itself without undue gestures. Robin Blaze is a strong countertenor who is recorded closely. The songs include some of the most famous in the repertoire, Dowland’s In Darkness Let Me Dwell and Robert Johnson’s Full Fathom Five among them, and some lesser tunes. Chance is at his best in the highly decorated Purcell song, ’Tis Nature’s Voice , with its dark-sounding introduction. The Purcell selections include the obsequious Be Welcome, Great Sir . Earlier songs seem more reasonably about the various attitudes towards love, rather than towards the rich and powerful. Yet Purcell is such a wonderful composer that even here he writes a gorgeous melody. Some listeners might prefer a subtler countertenor, someone like Michael Chance. But the riches of the repertoire are such that there is no direct competition to this ample, wholly satisfying, collection.
