Notes and Editorial Reviews

It is about time Max Schubel, the creative force behind Opus One, gave us a huge chunk of his own orchestral music. He is a terrific composer. He writes: "The three works recorded on this CD were written in the years between 1997 and 1999. The first of them was Cyreniade. Originally intended as a love song for a particular woman, the concept became less centered on one individual love and more focused on a broader outline that was in part mythologically based. The word siren kept coming to mind as did the earlier remembered voice of Yma Sumac, a singer I remembered from the 1950s. I modified the word siren in the title until it pleased me. Also on this disc I wanted to feature the novelty of writing a work for cello and French horn and Read more orchestra and I wanted to highlight the talent of the two fine artists heard on this recording. No one had ever written a work like this before. It took me almost a year to complete and by the time I was done, what I really had wasn't a concerto. It wasn't even a concertino. Though it was a work of major proportions, it seemed more like a rhapsody and thus the name. Recherche pour la Vision au dela was written with no concept in mind. It was truly a search for something - some kind of identity. During the months of composition, I tussled with this lack of definition, finally realizing that I was looking for something nebulous - a search for the vision beyond. More than this, I can't say. It is a tone poem of sorts, and the search for something tangible is pretty obvious in the way the work ends - it dissipates- vanishes into the beyond." 717281895101 Preiser 89510 VARIOUS Legendary Voices-Melanie Kurt "Melanie Kurt, soprano Read less
