Mozart did not write finer, more elegant music. The gorgeous arias flow like the waters of the Mississippi. Each different. It magnificent. Not to be missed are the wonderful clarinet and basset horn accompaniments! The glorious mezzo-soprano Parto, Parto. The also glorious soprano aria Non Piue di Fiori. Among others. The finale has a pace and a drama unrivaled in all opera. And the themes as dramatized are enough to uplift anyone who has any doubts about the possibilities for human goodness. Loyalty, trust, love, integrity, understanding, what makes for good political leadership, friendship, humanity, compassion, forgiveness, clemency. Not themes very much in evidence in nearly all operas, including the tragedies of Verdi and Puccini whose story line is almost too unpleasant to report. Yet La Clemenza Di Tito was rarely performed from about 1830 through the late 20th century. Its first performance at the Metropolitan Opera was in 1984! It was nearly a forgotten opera which is extraordinary considering the elegance and grace of Mozart's music. And as well as always his great economy, not using a note or measure not needed. Unlike Wagner's music, for example. Here is a serious opera, not the fluff of The Marriage of Figaro which distracts from the wonderful music.
