Armand Tokatyan was born to parents of Armenian descent on June 16, 1894 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The family soon moved to Alexandria Egypt where Tokatyan was engaged as a chansonier in small cafes. He continued to perform in cafes in Paris where he was trained to become a professional tailor. Upon returning to Egypt, between 1914 and 1918, he appeared in many operettas. Responding to the advice of the Director in the opera house in Cairo, he went to Milan and began to study voice professionally. The great Viennese critic Julius Korngold praised Tokatyan's "sound and darkly shaded tenor voice and its half sweet, half steely timbre" which he considered "very suitable for the stage" as well as the tenor's "youthful and joyful way of singing.
