ALBERGATI Corona dei pregi di Maria. VICTORIA Sancta Maria. Senex puerum. Ne timeas Maria. Vidi speciosam. Congratulamini mihi. Gaude Maria virgo. Quam pulchri sunt. Ave Maria Ens La Flora; Alida Oliva (sop) TACTUS 660103 (76:14 Text and Translation)

Pirro Capacelli Albergati (1663–1735) came from a noble family of Bologna. The present work, op. 13 (1717), consists of six monodic cantatas on six of the feast days Read more of the Blessed Virgin. Interleaved with them are polyphonic motets matching the feast days. (Pirro’s surname was Albergati Capacelli; presumably the names are reversed on this issue in order to place him correctly in any index.) Besides being active in public affairs in Bologna, he was a prolific composer. A cursory check of catalogs reveals nothing at all on records other than two previous issues on the same label that have not appeared here. The ensemble, unfamiliar to me, has several discs of similar repertoire in the catalog on this and other labels. Alida Oliva, the ensemble’s featured member, sings Albergati’s cantatas.

Only Victoria’s four-voice motets are sung a cappella ; those for five, six, and eight voices are sung with the same continuo group that accompanies the cantatas. In addition to a motet preceding each cantata, two extra motets suitable for any Marian feast frame the whole program. The notes emphasize the intentional contrasts built into the alternation of pieces, for Victoria’s sacred polyphony is church music, while Albergati’s secular monody is chamber music. Both genres are executed effectively. Oliva is a sensitive interpreter of the cantatas, ably supported by the ensemble. This well-filled disc is recommended.
