Notes and Editorial Reviews

HINDEMITH Cardillac Joseph Keilberth, cond; Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau ( Cardillac ); Leonore Kischstein ( Daughter ); Elisabeth Söderström ( The Lady ); Cologne West German RSO & Ch OPERA D’ORO 7067 (2 CDs: 90:00 Text and Translation) Live: Cologne 6/1968

Opera d’Oro often issues an opera in Read more two forms: a dirt-cheap edition with no libretto, and a mid-price one with complete texts, both with the same quality sound. I reviewed the low-priced Cardillac in Fanfare 29:2, and here at last is the mid-price one. My recommendations for this set as the best recording of Hindemith’s most dramatic opera still hold—barely. Two things have occurred in the intervening years: an Oehms Classics recording of the composer’s Mathis der Maler (31:4) has conquered that opera’s excessive length and seriousness, thanks to Simone Young’s dynamic leadership; and two fine DVD productions of Cardillac have appeared (31:3), led by Nagano on Belair 23 and by Sawallisch on DG 000916509. The singing and the playing on both DVDs are excellent; if you like watching opera at home, I heartily recommend the Nagano DVD. But Fischer-Dieskau’s Cardillac remains a unique dramatic force (his original DG LPs of the opera were basically this 1968 recording, although it was not then identified as a live performance). Now that a side-by-side German/English libretto is included, this becomes the preferred Cardillac on CD.
