Notes and Editorial Reviews

If you sample this record by listening first of all to the second movement (the allegretto) of the F major Quartet, I think your reaction is bound to be: this is distinguished Mozart playing indeed. Its technical excellence needs little comment: as with the Dvorák/Smetana record which AR liked so much last month, with this team you take technical mastery for granted as soon as you hear the first phrase, and straightaway it's the intensely musical quality of the playing which strikes you. Theirs is Mozart played with the classical virtues, above all with firm line, poise and sensibility. The surface of the music is polished, but how much the Guarneri Quartet find beneath. AR mildly criticised what he called "some rather Read more extravagant gestures" on the earlier record, but I find nothing of that kind here. Indeed, what I particularly like on this disc is the boldness and conviction of the Quartet's response to the big moments: clearly they're natural stylists in Mozart, speaking his language and not afraid to play him for all he's worth. Take a detail like the plunge into E flat after the first double-bar in that same movement of the F major Quartet: how telling they make it. And how magnificently the 'cellist presents his big King-of-Prussia tunes in both works.

The stereo is very good. At any price these performances could be recommended. I shall look forward to more recordings by the Guarneri Quartet, whose quality is now established as of the highest. Some outstanding achievements ought to be within their grasp if, as I hope, they continue over the next few years as they've begun.
