Notes and Editorial Reviews

It's probably both an indication of the universality of Copland's music and a measure of the stature of the Royal Philharmonic (not to mention the conductor) that these performances sound as idiomatic and fresh as the American competition. This Billy swaggers in all of the right places, though "The Open Prairie" is a shade less atmospheric than it might be (a technical note: The indexing on the documentation is mislabeled: "The Open Prairie" has its own index point, while the rest of the suite is indexed together). The full orchestral suite of Appalachian Spring benefits from the chamberlike clarity of this performance, so that it doesn't sound like the overblown cousin of the original scoring that even Copland's own Read more version (Sony) occasionally does. El Salón Mexico possesses the slightly tipsy-sounding ambience of its namesake—the trumpet is especially fruity. The only dud in the bunch is the Fanfare: The dry drum sound without much resonance brings out the work's bombastic side and makes it lose whatever nobility it might have. Kunzel with the Cincinnati Pops (Telarc) has the best recent version is his collection (though at full price, of course).

Philip Ellis is a young British conductor whose youthful interpretations here stress the balletic nature of most of the pieces. I can't argue with the selection either—the "Hoe-Down" is the only part of Rodeo that I like. With its first-class sound, this is a prime recommendation at budget price.
