Notes and Editorial Reviews

SCHUBERT Piano Sonatas: in c; in C, “Reliquie.” German Dances, D 783 Alfred Brendel (pn) ALTO 1040 (59:46)

This disc, remastered from a 1968 Vanguard recording, is most welcome. Although Brendel made later recordings of these two sonatas, including on DVD, these early interpretations really hold up well. He brings a suitably Beethovenian drive to the first movement of the C-Minor Sonata, and I think he is wise to omit Read more the exposition repeat, for the high drama doesn’t work well on rehearing. The development section is played even more urgently than usual, and the way everything unwinds during the coda is masterful. The slow movement is full of warmth in the quiet sections and forward motion during the repeated-chord climaxes. His tempo for the Minuet is perfect, and the trio section is allowed to breathe naturally. The taxing finale, a wild tarantella, is super-fast and intense in the A theme (with wonderfully clear repeated chords) and with slightly different pacing and coloring for the other themes, with half pedals that provide an eerie effect in certain passages. Despite more recent fine accounts by Leif Ove Andsnes and Murray Perahia, I recommend this budget version highly. And the same goes for the wonderful “Reliquie” Sonata in C, which is played in a free, Romantic way that suits the music much better than the stiff, stentorian versions by Rudolf Serkin, Sviatoslav Richter, and others. Again, Brendel makes a good case for omitting the exposition repeat in the first movement. The dances provide just the right light “filler,” and they’re played effectively in a different order than the published one. This is one reissue that I heartily applaud.
