Anne Akiko Meyers label debut on Koch International Classics highlights a beguiling program of the traditional and new. Stretching the boundaries of the classical recital, Meyers, with fellow Juilliard graduate, pianist Akira Eguchi, turns her renowned talents to Schubert's Fantasie, Op. 159, Arvo Part's Spiegel im Spiegel, the U.S. premiere of the Messiaen Fantasie, Piazzolla's Introduction et Angel and Milonga en Re "Tango," two ravishing arrangements of traditional Japanese folk songs, Kojo no Tsuki (Moonlight Over the Ruined Castle) and Haru no Umi (Sea in Spring), as well as startlingly personal renditions of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Chaplin's Smile. ----- “Every moment of Smile is generous, warm, and entertaining; as a whole, this album strikes a strong balance between ambition and amusement, none too wonky for fans with only a casual contact with classical, yet meaty enough to engage the eggheads.” “this is an ideal disc to get to know her with, but Smile would be just as good for late night reading or snuggling, as it combines the qualities of a wonderfully intimate feel, graciousness, and Meyers' own personal charisma. Bravo!” -- All Music Guide ----- "Ms. Meyers has just issued an appealing new CD, “Smile,” on the Koch International Classics label..., an eclectic collection of mostly short, tuneful pieces: Charlie Chaplin’s nostalgic 'Smile,' Astor Piazzolla’s seductive 'Milonga en Re' and 'Introducción al Ángel,' Michio Miyagi’s wistful 'Haru no Umi' ('Sea in Spring') ... played with an unfailingly sweet tone, molding her phrases like a singer. The pianist Akira Eguchi, Ms. Meyers’s partner ... on the CD, played with his customary clarity and taste.... If anyone needed reminding that Ms. Meyers is a performer of substance and skill, [Schubert’s Fantasy in C] was the proof. Her feathery lines wafted upward on Mr. Eguchi’s tremulous zephyrs during the opening bars, then the two emphatically drove through a fleet, clean finale.... Her gorgeous phrasing in [Harold Arlen’s “Over the Rainbow”] had a refreshing spontaneity.... [I]t made you wish there had been another set to come." -- Steve Smith, The New York Times [2/5/09, reviewing a concert featuring material from Smile] |
