Notes and Editorial Reviews

The first and last items above are the longest works on the program, framing a group of similar cantatas. Becker’s two instrumental pieces divide the program into three pairs of cantatas. Harry van der Kamp recorded both major works for Sony about a decade ago, a disc apparently not issued here. The Buxtehude cantata has been recorded at least five times in the past, but none seem to be available currently. Dirk Snellings recorded the shorter Bruhns piece and Hermann Max directed Tunder’s Da mihi Domine. Hence we have a neatly homogeneous program that is not likely to duplicate much of anything in your collection. The composers are linked, for Franz Tunder was Buxtehude’s father-in-law and Nikolaus Bruhns his pupil.

The six
Read more cantatas all feature a bass soloist, who should be a familiar name after such a long career on recordings with numerous early-music ensembles. He is sensitive to the varied moods of these works. Particularly interesting is the Christoph Bach work, a paraphrase of passages from all but one of the penitential psalms. In addition to van der Kamp’s version, Wolfgang Schöne also recorded it in a large Bach family collection, but I have not heard either of those. The music involves a lot of interplay with the solo violin, or rather violino piccolo, the latter instrument featured in this program. Altogether, the six cantatas make an effective program.
