Notes and Editorial Reviews

Vienna Philharmonic/Carlos Kleiber. Deutsche Grammophon 447 400-2 [with Symphony No. 7]

In a performance of notable urgency, Kleiber gets the Vienna Philharmonic yet again to play the Fifth as if it were a first encounter. The reading is violent, sinuous, shadowy and impassioned, the effect compelling without being overwrought. Kleiber presides over a gripping first movement that goes like a shot, and is to be commended for observing such musicological niceties as the exposition repeats of both the first movement and the finale. The mid-’70s analog recording has received state-of-the art remastering, yielding sound that is vivid and detailed. With a barn-burning account of the Seventh as the coupling, this is a disc to die

'' A Legendary Fifth''* January 5, 2016 By owen  ryan (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "*Penguin Guide. BBC Music Magazine: ''unforgettable, with the Vienna Philharmonic on blistering form here.'' The Seventh was proclaimed by Gramophone to be ''an equally distinguished performance of genius.'' The preceeding eight customer reviews pretty much cover all the bases. What more could I say? The only down side to this great disc is the somewhat congested or cloudy recording so typical of DG's Weiner recordings (although many may feel I'm too critical on this aspect). All the experts can not be wrong-- this is THE one to own!" Report Abuse
Revival January 25, 2014 By Robin D. (sydney, nsw) See All My Reviews "How lucky are we to be able to go back to these Outstanding recordings & to be able to compare each of them with other versions. Total control over the or orchestra & having the experience of seeing some of these people & able to attend recent concerts & then to be able to compare is such a delight." Report Abuse
