A New Standard for a Great Symphonic Recording July 12, 2013 By Martin B. (Lower Hutt, Wellington) See All My Reviews "I may have reviewed this recording before, but further listening has deepened my appreciation of this CD. This is, perhaps, Shostakovich's most popular symphony, and also his most recorded. Petrenko really delivers a new and totally valid view of this icon of the modern symphonic repertoire. The exciting and almost shocking insights into this "tough" and "harsh" symphony that this recording offers are beyond what an established Shostakovich listener could have expected, but immediately strike me as being utterly valid and "right". If this review seems somewhat confused, they simply reflect the excitement of suddenly experiencing a new, wonderful and absolutely new view of this great and now even more important music that will require much more listening and consideration. This recording, to me, is what totally justifies and validates the 21st century classical recording industry." Report Abuse
