Given the critical editions used, and the 20-year immersion which resulted in Donald Berman’s album The Unknown Ives, The Light That Is Felt comes with an impeccable Ivesian pedigree. But none of this would count for anything if it wasn’t for the fact that the disc represents a fertile meeting of minds belonging to two eloquent champions of 20th-century American music. Some of the songs set the likes of Byron and Milton, Heine and Keats; others record a day-to-day world, deepest emotion cheek-by-jowl with the whimsy of commonplace observation. The album opens with the lullabyembrace of ‘Songs my Mother taught me’, which sets the scene with nostalgic warmth.
