Notes and Editorial Reviews

The number of Scandinavian singers at German Opera Houses during the years between the two Wars was astonishingly large. Most of the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian singers specialized in the Wagner roles - Lauritz Melchior, Torsten Ralf and Set Svanholm are the most prominent examples among heldentenors. Carl Martin Oehmann was one of the most popular tenors at the Deutsches Operhaus Berlin from 1925 to 1937. About his performance in Meistersinger in 1929 Freymuth Riesen wrote: "Carl Martin Oehmann was a superbly lyric Walther with a melting sweetness in his voice but at the same time he preserved the authoritative spirit of chivalry. His singing is of high culture and his noble phrasing shines in the light of his radiant tenor voice. The Read more scene with Sachs at his house was beautiful beyond measure and both "Am stillen Herd" and the "price song" could not have been sung in a more convincing way." Until his death Oehmann was a very sought after singing teacher in Stockholm whose most renowned pupils were Nicolai Gedda and Martti Talvela. Read less
