Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Swiss composer David Philip Hefti has won numerous composition competitions including the Gustav Mahler Competition in Vienna, Pablo Casals in Prades, George Enescu in Bucharest, and was awarded the Hindemith Prize and the Composers’ Prize of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

Music is rightly regarded as an especially immaterial art. The notes, sounds and rhythms of which it is comprised are, in rational terms, nothing more than vibrations of the air. And even the metaphors and linguistic images that we traditionally use to describe it mostly emphasize the ethereal nature of the phenomenon. Notes hover, sounds waft towards us or traverse the auditory space and create a specific atmosphere. The incorporeal aspect of
Read more music within these pictorial worlds reflects its power to absorb the listener completely and keep them captive. And yet there is something along the lines of a material nature of music. Sounds can be coarse, soft, pointed or blunt; they can comprise various aggregate states, from a stony inflexibility to the volatile; it can seem that they let themselves be felt palpably as we hear them, and we can differentiate them according to their sensual value, their particular consistency and surface quality. This dimension plays a major role, particularly in contemporary music: the haptic aspect of music, the individual profile of its outer surface here becomes a compositional category all of its own, something that is made possible, even inevitable, by the composer’s conscious design decisions. It helps to remind oneself of these possibilities and connections when one is confronted for the first time with a piece of David Philip Hefti. Besides their internal structure (and thanks to it), David Philip Hefti’s works offer just such richly molded surfaces: textures that make this music unmistakable and that at the same time make it a sensual experience for the listeners. - Musiques Suisses
