Fifteen years ago I wrote an article about Peter Anders that was published in the International Dictionary of Opera. In that article, I said that the era of the 1930s and 1940s was the golden age of the German lyric tenor. Through the recording medium names like Richard Tauber, Julius Patzak, Helge Roswaenge, Josef Schmidt, Walter Ludwig, Herbert Ernst Groh, and Marcel Wittrisch became famous throughout the world as exponents of opera, operetta, and German Lied. I stated that the list would not be complete without the name of Peter Anders and that the Telefunken series of recordings were his best. On this disc, the first 14 selections dating from 1933 to 1939 are from that series. These early recordings reveal a lyric tenor with a distinctive bright metallic timbre, combined with an excellent technique, faultless intonation, and exemplary breath control. His vocal quality ranged from a pure head voice in soft passages through mezza-voce , to a ringing forte chest voice. As Henry Fogel stated in a review of an Anders recording in Fanfare 8:2, “The creamy legato, the elegant and musical phrasing, all stay in the memory long after you hear them.” Tragically, Anders died in an automobile accident in 1954 when he was only 46. As Fogel said in his review: “The loss presaged a similarly horrible early ending to the career of the next generation’s equivalent of Anders—Fritz Wunderlich.”

In Fanfare 25:2, I reviewed a CD recital of Peter Anders issued on Telefunken. As I stated in that review, “In his later career in the 1950s he became a dramatic tenor.” On this disc, the selections from Der Freischütz and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg are from that time period. He retained the bright tonal quality, and the arias are well sung. On what is listed as a bonus track is his only recording on this disc sung in Italian, “Una furtiva lagrima,” from 1942. The booklet contains biographical notes, and gives the dates and conductors of the arias. The sound is first-rate. I will take the liberty again of quoting myself from my previous review: “He was also a fine singer of Lieder and operetta, and made many recordings. I have 23 recitals of his on LP, so obviously I have always been a fan. The recordings of Peter Anders, particularly those on Telefunken, will always satisfy those who admire a clear, bright tenor voice used with taste and discernment. Recommended!”
