This captivating fifth volume of light music premieres certainly lives up to its designation this time around: it is loaded with real discoveries. And now that the ASV catalog has been cast into what is hoped will be temporary oblivion, this Dutton series, under the expert supervision of the brilliant composer-arranger Philip Lane, is the only game in town at this juncture.

We start with a 1988 concert work from a surprising source, the pen of Roy Budd, a short-lived jazz pianist who specialized in ominously accented film scores, such as Get Carter and The Stone Killer , but apparently harbored higher aspirations. Commissioned for the bicentennial celebrations of the French Revolution and therefore built around the revolutionary song La carmagnole , this music offers a polished and spirited opener.

Next comes the only non-premiere-recording item on the program, a brief but enchanting set of “portraits of children” entitled Aquarelles for string orchestra by the Rumanian-born Francis Chagrin, who, although he made a living as a film composer (he is represented in the Chandos series), also established a solid presence in the concert world with his two symphonies and Dialogues for piano and orchestra as well as a host of chamber works.

Next we are allowed to luxuriate in two recent and lyrically enrapturing works by Paul Carr (b. 1961): a superb Oboe Concerto, dazzlingly performed by its dedicatee Nicholas Daniel (the slow movement, “The Unusual Quietness of Snow,” is especially moving); and an Air for Strings , which ascends towards a peak of ecstatic poignancy.

Conductor Gavin Sutherland then brings on a highly congenial 2003 Clarinet Concerto, whose four suite-like movements are characterized by an exceptional melodic fluency, highlighted by a third movement valse manqué entitled “The Accidental Waltz,” where the theme and tempo never seem to get coordinated. It is marvelously played here by its commissioner Verity Butler.

The pièce de résistance is saved for last, where Philip Lane has reconstructed an eight-movement suite from the incidental music for the 1949 Peter Brook production of Anouilh’s Ring around the Moon by the light music master Richard Addinsell. This group of period waltzes and dances, featuring a two-step, tango, polka, and gallop—only one movement of which, the “Invitation Waltz,” has ever achieved independent currency—is an utter delight through its 20-minute duration and makes a fitting close to a superlative collection, effortlessly performed by the seasoned Royal Ballet Sinfonia under the stalwart Gavin Sutherland, with able assistance from Barry Wordsworth and Roderick Dunk.

This release is a joy to the ears and a benison to the spirit.
