Notes and Editorial Reviews

An emblematic work of the gothic period, Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame is, in a certain sense, a summary of his time. Just as architecture gained verticality thanks to the use of the ogival arch, the ribbed vault and the flyingbuttress, as scholastic thought unfolded a new, high-flying rhetoric, music blossomed into polyphony with a verticality belonging to the same movement. A quest for light, as in the cathedral in Reims, where Machaut was a canon. A major step on the course of Diabolus in Musica, following Du Fay's Se la Face ay Pale mass, which was very successful in 2004.
