All the works on this release are taken from the Old Hall Manuscript (compiled in England circa 1410-1415).
The breadth of extant musical styles prevalent in early 15th century England, contained in the manuscript collections known as Old Hall, are given attentive and informed performances by the Hilliard Ensemble in this welcome reissue of a 1991 EMI Reflexe recording by Virgin Records. Monophonic chants, polyphonic duets and trios, Mass movements and motets for two-four voices, and many hymns to the Virgin Mary by a variety of obscure composers provide the listener with a myriad of textures, declamatory rhythms, and harmonic styles.

Sometimes described as music "for the ears of God alone," these pieces, such as Bittering's 'En Katerine solennia'--a motet for the Feast of the martyred St. Catherine--challenge the listener to follow not only the melodic counterpoint, but also the individual texts. The Hilliard Ensemble makes this possible and, more importantly, rewarding, by their renowned attention to intonation and superb declamation.
