Notes and Editorial Reviews

PALESTRINA First Book of Madrigals for Four Voices Rinaldo Alessandrini, dir; Concerto Italiano BRILLIANT 93364 (56:39 Text and Translation)

First issued as Tactus 521601, this seems to be making its initial appearance here. These 21 madrigals have scarcely ever been recorded; the later set for five voices and the second book for four voices are hardly better known, while the spiritual madrigals have only been recorded twice. I can find just one recording of one of these Read more madrigals. The composer has been ridiculed for repenting his setting of amatory poems, since they are not at all licentious and the set was reprinted a number of times. The music is somewhat backward looking compared to contemporaries who were constantly pushing the boundaries of style, but they are quite typical of his own approach. Certainly performances as fine as these should earn a place in collections of late Renaissance music.
