It is possible that David Oistrakh was the most consistently satisfying violinist of his generation. At least that's the impression his large discography conveys. As it happens, EMI was responsible for some of his most memorable recorded achievements, many of which have been reissued numerous times, and in some cases reviewed for Classicstoday.com. There's little anyone can add to years of positive critical consensus concerning such catalog mainstays as the Beethoven Triple Concerto with Rostropovich, Richter, and Karajan, both versions of the Brahms Concerto (with Klemperer and Szell, respectively) and Double Concerto (Fournier/Galliera, Rostropovich/Szell), the two Prokofiev Concertos (No. 1 with Matacic, No. 2 with Galliera), plus those

warm, lyrically generous Mozart concerto collaborations with the Berlin Philharmonic, including a Sinfonia concertante to die for. And Oistrakh himself preferred his 1972 Shostakovich First concerto with the composer's son Maxim at the helm to his pioneering mono recording with Mitropoulos.
However, this 17-disc complete Oistrakh edition's main attraction for collectors concerns rarities that either are new to or long unavailable on CD, such as the superb 1954 Sibelius and Beethoven concertos with Sixten Ehrling and the Stockholm Festival Orchestra, and, with Jean Martinon, a passionate, vividly characterized Lalo Symphonie espagnole (including the once-rare-now-common central Intermezzo movement).
If you don't mind old-fashioned clarinet and bassoon vibrato circa Moscow 1955, an expansive Schubert Octet will give you pleasure. The "new" sonata recordings feature Oistrakh's equal-minded if not always sonically well-balanced partnership with Vladimir Yampolsky (the Franck, Khachaturian, and Mozart B-flat K. 454), plus a Beethoven "Kreutzer" hampered by Lev Oborin's dull pianism. For the most part, previously reissued items are represented by their most recent EMI transfer. Tully Potter's notes provide welcome biographical information plus interesting background details on the recordings themselves. Buy this release together with Brilliant Classics' wider ranging concerto collection and you'll have an instant, near-definitive Oistrakh library worth far more than its modest asking price.
