Notes and Editorial Reviews

REVIEW:

Klemperer achieves much to admire in the first two movements, with his typically clear textures abetted by some lovely playing by the Bavarian strings. But the Scherzo lacks charm and tends to plod, while the Finale is cheerlessly sober. I really wanted to like this Seventh—it strikes me as overall his best account — because Klemperer’s live 1966 Bavarian Fourth (EMI) is one of the most delightful ever on disc. As for the coupled Wagner, it has slightly more vivid sound than the Bruckner does, and the Italian orchestra plays well. The reading starts off a bit stiffly, but it gets better as it moves along, with some delightful counterpoint from the chuckling woodwinds.
