DELICIOUS PAIRING September 2, 2014 By Zita Carno (Tampa, FL) See All My Reviews "I've been hearing a good bit of Sibelius on the Classical Masterpieces channel on my TV, and it's quite surprising how so many otherwise good-to-great conductors miss the mark. Recently I heard, of all people, Herbert von Karajan, who should have known better, perform the Karelia Suite like---well, geriatric---I think that when it comes to Sibelius he's out of his depth. I acquired the CD with Sir Neville Marriner conducting, and it was pure delight. The "Ballade" was more like a sarabande of long ago, warm and inviting the listener to bask in the Nordic sunshine---and the March movement, which is supposed to be "moderato", was performed instead at "Allegro con spirito" the way it should be; even with my lousy right knee I felt like getting up and marching! Marriner has a way of finding just the right tempos almost all the time, and he did so here; also, the Grieg "Holberg Suite" was fantastic. Love the whole album...Saturday, Dec. 13---heard the Karelia Suite, with Sir Neville Marriner conducting, and I enjoyed it every bit as much. The opening march, titled Moderato, was moderate all right, but it had that lift, that sparkle that made it move a bit faster than indicated---Marriner sure has a way with finding the right tempos. And what I said about the other two movements still goes. Just beautiful!:)" Report Abuse
