Two powerhouse performers, cellist Matt Haimovitz and pianist Geoffrey Burleson, come together on "Odd Couple" from Oxingale Records. The title refers not only to the incongruous match of lyrical cello with percussive piano, but to a program of works by two of the most venerated masters of American music, Samuel Barber and Elliott Carter, paired with world-premiere recordings by two American composers from the generation born in the 1960s: David Sanford and Augusta Read Thomas. "Odd Couple" Celebrates Elliott Carter's 100th birthday with a new recording of one of his most popular and loved works, the Sonata for Cello and Piano. David Sanford's jazz and funk-inspired 22 Part I takes up where the distinctively American sound of early Carter leaves off, and Samuel Barber's Cello Sonata Op 6 contrasts a European romanticism to Augusta Read Thomas' more modern Cantos for Slava, dedicated to the memory of Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007) Thomas's work was commissioned for Haimovitz by ASCAP as part of Haimovitz's 2006 Concert Music Award for outstanding contribution to the performance of American Music. Haimovitz and Burleson tour the "Odd Couple" program extensively to concert halls, clubs and in a special presentation with DJ Olive in a program of duos for cello and piano, as well as cello and DJ. Each artist also tours individually and has an enthusiastic fan base--many already won over to new American music, and others who are ready to sample any new recording from these charismatic artists.
