Notes and Editorial Reviews

J.S. Bach's monumental Goldberg Variations, performed by the acclaimed trio of cellist Matt Haimovitz, violinist Jonathan Crow and violist Douglas McNabney (2007 Juno-Nominated album: Mozart the Mason - "the most essential Mozart anniversary disc so far" Star Ledger). In 1955, pianist Glenn Gould soared to worldwide acclaim with his interpretation of Bach's pinnacle work; in honor of the 25th anniversary of Gould's death Haimovitz, Crow and McNabney record the work and bring it on tour extensively through the US and Canada. Bach's universal appeal, one of his best loved works, and this internationally renown, young, charismatic and widely touring ensemble of colleagues from McGill University in Montreal combine to make this one of Read more the hottest classical releases of the year.  A revelation! May 26, 2012 By Robert Turoff (Princeton, NJ) See All My Reviews "Anyone familiar with only piano renditions of The Goldberg Variations will realize at once that many more possibilities are contained within the piece. The notes by violist Douglas McNabney mention renditions for solo guitar and saxophone quartet. I cannot help wondering how I would feel about the piece had I become acquainted with it by way of this string trio version instead of one of Glenn Gould's masterful piano interpretations.

This marvelous string trio executes the work beautifully, using the abilities inherent in string instruments: sostenuto, crescendo and decrescendo on individual notes and cordes, vibrato, etc. exquisitely."
