Notes and Editorial Reviews

If you already have the first two volumes in this important, ambitious, and exceptionally well performed and recorded series, then of course you'll want to add this new one to your collection. And if you've read my reviews of Vols. 1 & 2, whether or not you own the recordings, then you'll be familiar with the project's organizational scheme: multiple singers and pianists dividing the performing/interpretive duties, the disc's program following an alphabetical order rather than a chronological one--with Volume 3 we are at the end of the songs beginning with "L" (the disc begins with Harpalus and ends with Luck and Work).

Like no other composer, Ives defines across his solo vocal oeuvre the essence of American
Read more song from the latter 19th century through the 1920s, one of the most fascinating and tumultuous transitional periods for musical style (and no doubt Ives was the perfect man for the job!)--and not just popular song, art song, folksong, patriotic song, parlor song, or hymnody, but all of these, sometimes in the same piece! And that's one reason this collection, with its varied mixture of styles, themes, and compositional periods on each disc, is so interesting to listen to; this more or less random selection keeps our ear more attentive and in a way is more truthful to Ives' innate eclectic compositional sensibility.

After the relative uneven quality of singing in Volume 2, in this set consistency is restored: with only a couple of exceptions, the interpretations and vocalism are first-rate. My reservations concern the virtually unintelligible words and covered tone of soprano Lielle Berman on the opening song, a similarly inarticulate I Hear a Tone by soprano Sumi Kittelberger, and countertenor Ian Howell's vocally uncomfortable Hymn. But these are very few complaints among 33 selections.

Highlights include Robert Gardiner's The Housatonic at Stockbridge (whether in its orchestral setting in Three Places in New England or in this solo-voice/piano "translation", the most evocative song ever written about a river), In the Alley, Ich grolle nicht, and I'll Not Complain--the latter two the same song in German and in English translation; mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford's In the Mornin'; tenor Kenneth Tarver's Die Lotusblume; and baritone Michael Cavalieri's In Summer Fields and He Is There!, both of these among Ives' most wonderful marriages of text, mood, image, and music. The sound, from the same Yale University venue as the previous volumes, is excellent. Again, song texts are available only online. Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long for Volumes 4, 5, and 6!
