"Laplante, a Canadian who won prizes in the mid-1970s at the Geneva, Sydney, and Moscow (Tchaikovsky) competitions, plays with real imagination, flexibility, color, and—at the same time—obvious respect for the score. His technique is exemplary, his conceptions are well thought out, and his contrasts of dynamics and textures are effective without calling undue attention to themselves. His Miroirs is, from start to finish, quite simply one of the best I know, with a thrilling Alborada and a beautifully paced and balanced La Vallée des cloches.
