Except for Chopin and Liszt, no other composers have done so much to expand the resources of the piano as the two whose works appear on this album. Contemporaries and friends, keenly responsive to the cultural cross currents of their time, bearing certain superficial resemblances in the outward circumstances of their lives, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy nevertheless showed marked independence in their music as well as in their style of living.

No one familiar with the body of their works would accuse either of imitating the other, yet it is impossible not to note the cross fertilization that enriched the art of both. Debussy’s Reflets dan l’eau and Soirée dans Grenade owe something to Ravel’s Jeux

A chance remark of Debussy’s to the Spanish pianist Ricardo Viñes, to the effect that he should like to write music so free that it would sound improvised, was overheard by Ravel, who shortly afterwards showed Viñes the set of five piano pieces known as Miroirs. On hearing the Oiseaux tristes from this work, André Suares remarked, “If it were possible for music to paint an object without first disclosing it, Ravel’s succeeded better than any other.” When Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune appeared in 1894, Ravel was one of few who responded excited to this new world of sound.
