Notes and Editorial Reviews

Contrary to common belief, romanticism is usually a product of the big cities. It depends on communication between people of high intellectual alertness, since it calls for a most intimate association of consciousness and intuition, or of philosophy of art and creative urge. All four composers represented on this recording come from big metropolitan centers, and all four have at times expressed their artistic principles in well-chosen words, and not only through their music. Although their styles are quite different, and although they belong to two different age groups – Copland and Sessions being roughly twenty years older than Kirchner and Rorem – I would not hesitate to call them romantic composers, at least inasmuch as their Read more compositions emanate from a specific privacy of thinking and feeling that is largely a reaction to the civilization that surrounded and stimulated them in their youth.

Also, all four are definitely American composers in the works here presented, though not specifically through use of folklore material. It is true that Rorem uses certain mild dissonance and parallel progressions in his Barcarolles which are traditionally associated with the American art song and Copland employs in the Scherzo of his Sonata certain “crystalline” (as he calls them) sonorities recalling those used in jazz improvisation. But more important is that the spirit is American. This is especially true of Sessions and his one-time pupil Kirchner. Something in the essence of the music recalls the best of American modern poetry and modern philosophy.

Great customer service February 19, 2013 By Cathy C. See All My Reviews "My first copy of this CD was flawed - it had some scratches and was skipping. ArkivMusic immediately sent me a new one - I was amazed at how quickly it arrived. I didn't have to go through all the hassle of shipping the old one back first. The new one is in perfect shape and I am really enjoying the recording." Report Abuse
