Notes and Editorial Reviews

BACH Brandenburg Concertos Ross Pople, cond; London Festival O ARTE NOVA 340310 (2 CDs: 99:14)

Nothing lifts the spirits quite like a well-played set of Brandenburg Concertos. So I’m feeling pretty good right now, having just auditioned these essentials, smartly played by Ross Pople and his London Festival Orchestra. And it doesn’t hurt that they come to us on a pair of super-budget Arte Nova discs. Pople’s direction is brisk and lively, and his players (on modern instruments), meeting every challenge, respond with like Read more enthusiasm. The two movements of the third concerto are separated by the Largo from the violin and harpsichord sonata BWV 1019. The soloist is unnamed, as are all of the players, who deserve our heartiest encomiums. It’s a pity. I’m sticking with Brandenburgs by Pinnock (both versions) and/or Savall for my desert island, but you’ll have no regrets if you give this set a spin.
