First, the bad news. This is a Japanese Camerata disc, and while texts and translations are provided, they are in German and Japanese only. There are English notes, so Camerata obviously planned this release for an English-speaking market—but no translations are provided for those who don’t speak German (or Japanese).

All the rest, though, is good news. This is a delightful discovery, and if you are even moderately fluent in German you can follow the printed German texts and enjoy these truly lovely songs. Eduard Marxsen (1806–1887) is known, if he is known at all, as the teacher of Brahms, and dedicatee of Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto. I had read the name before, but never encountered a note of Marxsen’s until this disc arrived from Fanfare headquarters. It is truly lovely. Marxsen’s is not, perhaps, a voice of startling originality, but he was clearly a composer with something to say. The songs are melodically inspired, the piano music is expertly written and highly effective, and I found myself returning to the disc quite a few times not out of a reviewer’s duty, but for pleasure.

The excellent notes by Otto Biba make clear just how much Brahms admired Marxsen. In 1883, Brahms at his own expense, had Marxsen’s 100 Piano Variations on a Folksong printed, and throughout his life Brahms expressed gratitude for what Marxsen taught him and admiration for Marxsen’s music. Anyone who enjoys the music of Brahms or any other of the German Romantics will find a great deal of pleasure in this disc.

In addition to the delights of Marxsen’s music, some of the success of this recording is due to the superb performances by all three participants. So often when we get a disc of lesser-known repertoire, we have to put up with barely adequate performances. Not in this case. Alexandra Coku’s extremely attractive lyric soprano shows flexibility, tonal warmth, and great range; Marcos Fink’s warm baritone is used with consummate intelligence. And Anthony Spiri gets credit for digging through the archives of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna and choosing the program, as well as for colorful and sensitive playing. The natural, clearly recorded sound is another asset. As much as I regret the absence of English texts, I still find myself urging the reader to purchase this disc and share with me a wonderful discovery.
