Notes and Editorial Reviews

Colin Davis’s Berlioz cycle, a monument of the LP era, continues to sound well on CD through its intrinsically musical qualities: wide dynamic spectrum, intelligent balance, and the energy, tenderness and sure tempi of the premier Berlioz conductor of our time. The overtures sparkle, the symphonies run the gamut from the nostalgic to the grotesque. With the Symphonie funèbre and Harold there is no more satisfying version; alternatives for the Fantastique include two fine period-instrument recordings, but Davis is a must for any collection. Performance: 5 (out of 5), Sound: 5 (out of 5)

Berlioz: A Great Composer at His Best. September 7, 2012 By Richard F. Buckley (Jefferson Hills, PA) See All My Reviews "Hector Berlioz was a unique composer in many ways. For instance, he did not always adhere to the accepted norm that symphonies were composed of four movements. The Symphonie Fantastique, included here, consisted of five movements. The Symphonie Funebre et Triumphale, also included, was made up of three. Also included are Harold in Italy, Roman Carnival Overture and Corsair Overture. Berlioz exuded excitement in all of his works. His Allegros usually rocked the house, and even hiAdagios were often quite exciting. Here you will find no exception to the rule.

This 2 cd set leaves nothing to be desired. Fans of Berlioz and even casual listeners will be thrilled with the offering. Sir Colin Davis and the LSO present the musical masterpieces with great feeling and expertise. The selections are all the right ones, and the recordings include over 2 1/2 hours of sheer joy!

Whether you are a beginner just becoming familiar with the composer or a hard core fan of Hector, you need to add this set to your collection. They are among my very favorite CDs.
