"...This Bolshoi version of Boris Godunov, though, seems never to have been available in the west before. Using the then-standard Rimsky-Korsakov orchestration, it was recorded in Moscow in 1982, with an all-Russian cast just about as good as could have been assembled at the time.

Yevgeny Nesterenko was arguably the finest Boris of his generation. Both the tenor, Vladimir Atlantov (as the pretender Dmitry, quaintly called the "fictive king" in this cast list), and the soprano, Yelena Obratsova (Marina), were then at the height of their vocal powers, while conductor Mark Ermler was always much more than just a safe pair of hands.
