Notes and Editorial Reviews

The work of Ernest Bloch, born in Geneva, bears the mark of a mystical and passionate expressionism. In his music, he aimed at transposing what is universal in human nature beyond the differences of culture and religion. He studied composition in Geneva and Frankfurt, as well as the violin with Ysaye in Brussels. He composed and taught music in Geneva while working in his parents' souvenir shop. Seeking better conditions, he went on tour in the United States in 1916, and settled there with his family. Several of his compositions were performed for the first time in the U.S. and met with considerable success: Schelomo, Suite Baal Shem, Concerto Grosso No. 1, the First String Quartet, Israel, America, amongst others. In 1930, health problems Read more and the need for new sources of inspiration led him to return to Switzerland. In Ticino he wrote "The Sacred Service." In 1938, he returned to the United States and settled permanently at Agate Beach on the Pacific Coast. During his final years he devoted himself completely to composing. When he died in Portland, he left a rich musical heritage to the world. Read less
