Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is the Messiah that started it all, the first period instrument performance recorded with a choir of men and boys. It introduced music lovers the world over to Christopher Hogwood, Emma Kirkby, and a whole host of performers who have since become ubiquitous as the "English Early Music Mafia," appearing as they do under zillions of different ensemble names on a variety of labels. Hogwood's performance still holds its own, however, as one of the finest and freshest available. A first-rate effort. --David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com This is the Messiah that started it all, the first period instrument performance recorded with a choir of men and boys.  The turning point May 2, 2013 By J S E T. (West Grove, PA) See All My Reviews "Hogwood's performance of Messiah seems to be the turning point in recorded performances. Here are light textures, well articulated playing, and excellent singing from a small group. The pacing seems natural, neither grand nor swift. Still a remarkable performance. Higgenbottom on Naxos and Jacobs on Harmonia Mundi are also very fine indeed. The choice may come down to price, availability, or singers." Report Abuse
