Notes and Editorial Reviews

As a bulletin from Bologna dated July 1985, this proclaims the famous tenor to be in fine form, singing powerfully, sweetly, passionately, musically, freely. The last adverb needs emphasis as in recent years a word not uncommonly applied by critics of his voice-production has been 'tightly'. But then, there are no songs quite like these for freeing the voice. They tell of hearts full or broken, love lost or won, and all under the warm Italian skies where the tenor is king and where he can rejoice in his tenordom and feel free. They brought out the best in Caruso and Gigli too. So we recognize the tradition as Pavarotti luxuriates in the full resonance of his upper middle register in Voce 'e notte (the first in the programme by the master of Read more the genre, de Curtis), or as he spins out the long mezza voce cry of the exile longing for his Santa Lucia luntana.

One advantage Caruso and Gigli lacked was that of modern recording (in San Giorgio di Poggiale and amply resonant), with an extra sharpness of focus on the CD. They also had to do without the arrangements of these songs by Giancarlo Chiaramello. These also make free with the resources, strings and woodwind furling and whirling in chromatic decoration, horns and timpani enriching the texture somewhat in the manner of Canteloube painting the Auvergne.
