Notes and Editorial Reviews

As impressive as he is in such repertoire as the virtuoso arias of Vivaldi and Handel, it's in these lute and consort songs (and elsewhere in folksongs) that Andreas Scholl reveals the full depth and range of his voice and artistry. In these songs, the primacy of melody--and invariably lovely melody!--wants such a voice, silver-toned, limpid, liquid, flowing as easy as breath, to celebrate its own beauty, while a different kind of virtuosity is required to attend to and convey mood and meaning of the words. Of course there are many ways to sing these songs--an aspect that both attracts and immediately reveals the strengths and weaknesses of singers--but a testament to Scholl's remarkable
Read more interpretive ability is that after you hear him in, say, Dowland's "Go nightly cares" or Robert Johnson's "Care-charming sleep" and "Full fathom five", comparisons with others' versions seem irrelevant: the one you've just experienced could be changed, but couldn't be bettered.

Scholl's technique is simply flawless, and there's no one more sensitive to variables of phrasing and subtleties of the effect of even the smallest dynamic or color change. Listen to the way he "colors" the chromatic note changes in Dowland's "From silent night", or to his marvelous imitation of the bell at the end of "Full fathom five". He's a master of legato even while perfectly enunciating the texts. But his legato is not just "legato"; he varies it, as in the easy, flowing lines of the anonymous "O Death, rock me asleep", the rhythm-enhancing style of Dowland's "Now, O now, I needs must part" and Byrd's "Though Amaryllis dance in green", or the tension-creating manner of the opening passages of "Go nightly cares". Among a disc full of highlights, one of the more impressive songs is by the virtually unknown Patrick Mando--"Like as the day"--one of the more affecting examples of the lovely, simple melancholy that characterizes so much of this repertoire.

Scholl receives excellent accompaniment from the viol consort Concerto di Viole and from lutenist Julian Behr, who also treat us to several instrumental selections among the generous program's 21 tracks and nearly 80 minutes of music. If you somehow haven't yet heard Andreas Scholl, don't hesitate to begin here; without doubt the rest of his recordings will soon find their way into your library. Scholl's existing fans will need no encouragement! Highly recommended.
