ALFONSO EL SABIO CANTIGAS OF ENGLAND , CSM 47, 39, 288, 85, 135, 6, 296 Eduardo Paniagua, dir; Musica Antigua PNEUMA 990 (56:42 Text and Translation)

Another in Eduardo Paniagua’s series of cantigas, just noted with regard to a collection titled El Camino de Santiago ( Fanfare 37:3), focuses attention on England, not the likeliest subject for Read more this series. Yet Paniagua finds seven songs that fit the bill and adds an instrumental version of CSM 82. The sites of the narratives are England and Brittany. Some are simple stories of a drunken monk who is given sobriety by the Blessed Virgin, or of a fire at Mont Saint Michel that destroys everything except the statue of the Virgin. Cantiga 135, called a great cantiga because its number is a multiple of five, a designation I never knew before, is a story of two lovers from Brittany who marry with the help of the Virgin after many adventurous complications. Paniagua tightens up some of the longer cantigas such as this one by reciting many of the dialogues. Two of the cantigas betray anti-Semitic sentiments of the age (one is the well-known story of Hugh of Lincoln), and several tell of a monk and his devotion to the Virgin Mary.

Paniagua has been averaging two discs of cantigas per year, so the end of his projected complete set is a distinct possibility, somewhere around 50 discs, giving us the largest body of musical composition on records before the complete Bach church cantatas (of which we have five integral sets). The performances are always lively and full of spirit, accompanied by period instruments, textually complete (allowing for those recited passages), and endowed with a booklet of Galician texts and Spanish translations with informative if brief notes on each selection. This is a valuable series that grows more entrancing as it proceeds.
